“Together, we can harness the power of design and make a better living.”

Good design can improve people’s living, not only for the mass but also for those in need. Ted Chan from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University once had a conversation with a mother who is visually impaired. He was told that the mother wanted to cook for her children. Ted went through the general cooking process in his mind, trying to figure out the difficulties in doing this with visual impairment. He then created a set of knife and sheath, saFe. The sheath can serve as a metal finger guard to prevent injuries in cutting food.

People-oriented with No Distinction
Based on Ted’s observation, most products nowadays are designed for the larger mass. The needs of minorities are often neglected, “I understand that designers need to consider the sales factors. Therefore, I hope to take advantage of my student status to design for minorities, before I have to consider a lot about the market,” said Ted.

In the long run, he hopes that as the design industry getting more matured in Hong Kong, it will be easier for the designers to join the ranks of helping the minorities.“Together, we can harness the power of design and make a better living for different types of people,” Ted wishes.
