“Designers can investigate on local history and culture more detailly, as every region has its own stories.”

In the eyes of adolescents, the word “History” may refer to some iconic events or the dates in the textbook. In fact, many exciting local stories reflect the changes in times as well. Hong Kong Urban Legends Game Set, as reflected by its name, takes urban legends as the game theme. Jazmin Luk hopes to encourage our younger generation to explore the history through her design of game.

Exploring History in the Community
Once the game set is opened, a familiar board and pattern is seen, because Jazmin has used the Chinese Happy Chess, one of the local collective memories, as a blueprint to create this new game. As for the content development, to understand the history and urban legends from over a hundred years ago requires much effort and thorough research. Jazmin has visited historical sites, searched online, read old newspaper, and even interviewed residents.

As more Hong Kong designs are about Hong Kong food, architecture and so on, the public is educated to put attention on local culture. With such foundation, Jazmin suggests a further understanding. “Designers can investigate on local history and culture in more details, as every region has its own stories,” said Jazmin. After the extensive investigation, the works designers create will strongly reflect the characteristics of the times.
