“Designers do not interact for the purpose of making money, but new initiatives may pop up over a chit-chat.”

The gameplay of a game product is usually designed before the stage of visual design. However, this cannot apply to the production process of Divergence: A Design Thinking Game Kit, whose game design and visual design process are carried out simultaneously.

The Motion Design Director of eMotionLAB, Kat, is responsible for the visual part. She recalled that sometimes she needed to start designing without knowing the game content. Despite the increased difficulty, the experience was eye-opening. For instance, she found out that the style of a character can influence the whole gameplay. Obviously, cross-field communication stimulates the growth of designers, “Discussing design works or sharing technical matters will make us learn and grow,” said Kat.

Cohesion and Strength
Mandy Tsang, the founder of eMotionLAB, described that what the design industry in Hong Kong needs is “glue”, which refers to a designer platform for constant gathering, “Designers do not interact for the purpose of making money, but new initiatives may pop up over a chit-chat,” said Mandy. She believes that there are a lot of design talents in Hong Kong. Bringing them together will strengthen the industry and the public will understand more about the value of design.
