“Designers can enrich their own experience, so that new elements will appear in their works.”

Each designer has a strong personal style, but that doesn't mean there is no room for collaboration. The Be Blessed with Conjugal Felicity Wedding Book, jointly designed by Mary Yu, Joe Wong and Cecilia Cheng, is a good demonstration.

Mary has created a series of illustrations on traditional costumes, while Joe focuses on paper art based on Chinese paper crafting. As both are working on the modern interpretation of traditional culture, they decided to give their first trial of designer collaboration and create a unique work. A pair of couples in traditional Chinese costumes are drawn by digital techniques, combined with the art of paper sculptures.

The Art of Collaboration
Although new sparks were seen, effort was needed for coordination, “For example, a wedding book should not be too thick, so the number of layers of paper artwork is limited. This is a different experience from doing paper art only by myself,” said Joe. The role of manufacturer is therefore much more important than usual. Cecilia took on this important task. She helped to solve technical issues, such as how to present paper art on a booklet without distortion in shapes.

For this first-time collaboration, Mary described it as a valuable experience, “Designers can enrich their own experience, so that new elements will appear in their works to make audience impressed,” said Mary.
