“Hong Kong is where information from all over the world is gathered, which gives designers a broader perspective.”

STEM education is a big trend today. The Green Science/Magic Water Tap, a STEM toy created by 4M, allows children to assemble by themselves. The water tap will float in mid-air with continuous water flow. The founder of 4M, Rance Chu, hopes to promote environmental awareness through this toy, teaching children to think green as water resources in the real world are not unlimited.

The Trend in Toy Design
4M used to focus on overseas markets, where most toys have STEM education elements. In contrast, children in Hong Kong prefer toys with cartoon characters on them or brightly colored. Science and environmental themes are rare in the design of toys. However, since STEM education is becoming common and even essential in Hong Kong, Rance is trying to reintroduce the products of 4M into the local market, after slightly adjusting the package according to the Hong Kong consumers’ taste.

As an international city, Rance believes that Hong Kong design does have a great advantage, “Hong Kong is where information from all over the world is gathered, which gives designers a broader perspective. I myself have been benefited from this. Since I discovered that foreigners create STEM toys that are educational and meaningful, I have started to develop my business and create a lot of products in this field,” said Rance.
