Kenny Cheung: Story of Seeking New in the Old

Wearing a smartwatch, pairing the wireless headphones with the mobile…isn’t it your daily routine? Kenny Cheung, the co-founder of Solos Technology, was the same. Being accustomed to different kinds of smart wear, one day he got a sudden brainwave: why are glasses still in traditional styles? He then immersed himself into the design of smartglasses.

Human-first Innovations
“To seek new in the old is sometimes more challenging than creating a brand-new product.”A pleasant experience is required as the incentive for users to change their habits, "Less is more. Some designers love to apply new technologies, but heavy and bulky products won't sell well," said Kenny.

Insisting on human-first approach, comfort and a good look come first for the smartglasses of Solos Technology. They are lightweight like plastic-frame glasses. Electronic devices are placed on the temples, which can be easily installed with front frames of various styles.

Merging Technology and Tradition
The real test for the team is the issue of battery. As it is impossible for one to wear and take off the glasses often, the battery charged during sleep time must support a full-day use. Kenny frankly admits that the first-generation products were not up to this standard, so an extra temple was given to every buyer for use in charging time. The second-generation product has been much optimized. The battery can last for 11 hours even if the user keeps listening to music or talking on the phone.

"If you want to be human-first, you need technology to do so," to Kenny, the technological shock may be a mere platitude, but not necessarily an ordeal. It is an opportunity to bring new faces to traditional products.
